The case for anothercut in interest rates was boosted yesterday when inflation data came in weaker than expected.

Although soaring petrol prices drove the consumer prices index (CPI) to 2.5 per cent last month from 2.4 per cent in August, the figure was well below the 2.7 per cent many in the City predicted.
