Could your drive pay its own way? Owners make £5,000 renting them out

Driveways can be expensive enough to maintain, never mind the cost to resurface them. But whether gravel, brick or asphalt, many are turning out to be paved in gold.

Their owners are earning up to £5,500 a year from renting them out to drivers looking for somewhere to park on a regular or one-off basis.

Off-road parking spaces near stadiums, airports and train stations are in particular demand. Susan Omar, who is self-employed, has six spare spaces on her driveway five minutes from Bournemouth airport, which have earned her more than £1,700

The mother of five said: ‘Customers who rent my driveway save a considerable amount over what they would pay if they parked at the airport so it represents good value to them.

‘But I also offer personalised meet and greet at the airport, a clean car to come back to and a cup of tea on arrival. And for me, the extra money is much welcome, particularly for our family holidays and Christmas.’

Josh Dhaliwal, 36, lets out two spaces by his flat near Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium in West London. Last year he earned more than £3,000 by charging a flat fee of £15 a day for each space.
