10 Million Living Solo By 2026- The Times Dec 06

The number of people living alone is set to rise by 53 per cent over the next 20 years, a report claims today.

One person households will total almost 10 million by 2026, as more and more people opt to live on their own.

The number of married couple households is also set to fall from 9.6 million to 8.8 million in the same period - a reduction of 34,000 a year.

The changing shape of society will prompt a change in the house-building sector, the alliance & Leicester report said.

More than 200,000 extra properties will be needed each year to cope with the increasing number of households, with three-quarters of them set aside for those living alone.
